What is most important to a game?
« on: July 09, 2009, 06:30:28 AM »
I am just looking for opinions here, what do you think is the most important factor in having a successful game? There is an endless list of possibilities on what it could be(community/updates/donations/etc). I am not looking for a "an equal balance of all factors" answer. Everyone has one that they feel is more important than the rest, which do you believe is most important for your game?

There are many factors that are important to the game, however none come as important than balance, period. Regardless, to keep in line with your requested discussion, uniqueness comes second. Often times the games are simply far to familiar within the MC Code family.

Yet the third most important thing, in which this game lacks, is simply giving the users the ability to dis-associate themselves from having to compete against one another. There is simply to much focus with attacking other players, this unfortunately puts many new users in the immediate position of quitting before they actually get started. Sure there are mods in which supply limited controls, however, with the allowance of players being able to just increase their stats without leveling, seriously dimensions from the game balance. Giving the players the choice of competing against each other, well help retain newbies, as well as give them the opportunity to level up and raise their stats accordingly without the risk or forced interactivity with other players.

Just my thoughts,

well there are in fact many things that people want. what I want is the ability to make your own avatar. like what Gaia Online has where you can create your avatar, they use javascript and that is one of my biggest weakness in JS. that's why I'm counting on your McCodes, you will make our dreams come true. I want to have the upgrade once it comes out but I want it free since I've been dying to get the new upgrade.

I like your point too 2nd poster. I want to be able to get my site a word around the place once it is published and cleared out where I can actually have people come to my site and everything.

also if noobies come to the site, you can have my mod of the attack thing where if the user has X amount of vulnerability since he is a noob, they don't get attacked till later on in the game once the X days are up. My mod is good too because people can't attack the admins, mods, assistants. they can attack the NPC's and other users, just not a user that has a higher level than them.

also sites to look forward too to get your site promoted and everything is at least a website that generates dedicated new games and also new games and just selects random ones from McCodes so people are aware of your creation. please make my dream come true.

I think there talking about the less complex game text based MMO's not the full graphics one like WOW

IMHO players want stuff to do that they enjoy doing
Whatever the game type and goals it will collect players that like that type of game and want to do thoses goals and to keep them there they want stuff to do!
they want a lot of choices of things to do not jsut a game where they log in a few times a day do some actions and log off to tomorrow (there are those that want that) but I think most of the players want a game that is involved they you have a lot of choices on what your character can do and how you can advance in the game and enjoy it on there terms.
Some players want a massive combat game with lots of combats lots of ways to combat and groups to join to combat more
some want a roleplaying game where they haev houses groups and places to collect roleplay and chat
some want a game where they can collect lots of stuff trying to get all the neat prizes in the game depending on the demographic your aiming on you have to make stuff for that group a lot of things to do so they have choices and lots of things to keep them intrested and playing.

Everybody seems to miss the first step, the players themselves.
Players are the most lethal weapon in any games arsenal, and everything you do and develop is because and for them.

In my experience, no-one wants something new, they want something they know how to play, and their main goal playing the game is to get to the top.
See, every time you add something new to your game, the players have to learn it first, and if a player can't master it, they leave it.

Short and simple, these are things I've learned with round about three years experience in developing web-games, and about another seven years of playing games.

I agree players are the first step you need to pick your target audience and make a game for them
I dont agree with not wanting somthing new.
There are hundreds of games out there making the same thing that they already know is pointless as there are already games they play and no one wants the same game and the same options over and over.
People want the best game they can play with lots of things to do they dont want another carbon copy of the same games they want to figure new games out thats why week after week they get new Games and try to learn them learn all the secrets and master them then get the next game.
why is wow still popular becouse they keep adding more and more things to it more secrets to uncouver more enemys to fight more.
same gets stale and yes there are some people that do want somthing they dont have to learn and is the same there is an audience for that but they are laready playing games they like and have no need to move to somthing new.
IMHO

Ok, I disagree with that one theory of yours.
The reason "most" of the players seek other games, is that they can not make up what the other players that's been playing for two or odd years has made.

They seek new games, without that many players that they came be in a race to the top.
I can bet you one thing though, player activity will be much higher at the beginning of a game, than a couple of years down the road, they like to be competitive - it's human nature, so abuse it.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one ;)
IMHO people are always looking for "the next big thing" and more more more
but agreeing to disagree is not a bad thing everybody has diffrent wants needs and Oppions
